5 Tips On How to Start Writing Songs

This post is for people who have never written a song in their life and had the thought cross their mind that “well heck I could have written that song!”.

  • Start! – Put pen to paper and start writing something!  It doesn’t necessarily have to be lyrics, it just helps to get in the habit of writing it down.
  • Do a little homework – Songwriting is a tough sport and people dedicate their lives to it, but it can be fairly simple. In most cases, songs are like cakes. Their are ingredients and directions to follow that will help you write a better song. So the more training and better understanding you have of songs the better your songs will be!
  • Pick an idea – Whatever you write doesn’t have to be Shakespeare, but try to find a topic, a feeling, a idea that stimulates you to write about.  For example, write a song about love, BBQ, Pokemon, aliens, pandas…the list goes on. Don’t be scare to have fun!
  • Find a buddy – Collaboration is a huge part of every facet of the music business and songwriting is no different.  The best songs ever created were made by two people.  Ever hear of Lennon and McCartney?
  • Do it a lot – If you intend on being a hit songwriter, you have to write lots of songs.  If you want to do anything of value you have to work hard.  10,000 hours my friend!
